Misadventures in Thinking, 2010, Dimensions variable, 3 minutes 02 seconds (continuous loop), digital video
“Although this was another chance for me to ‘play’ in the studio, it also carried more serious undertones. I was essentially putting myself in harm’s way by trying to exceed my physical capabilities of catching an unpredictable hard rubber ball as it ricocheted back at me at high speeds. It was both a very energetic release of frustration and a metaphor for the repetitive negative thinking that we can sometimes get caught up in. All I had to do to stop risking my potential injury was to stop throwing the ball, but sometimes as humans we can’t always find the necessary perspective to see things this easily.
The slowed speed of the video, reminiscent of some of Edward Muybridge’s photographic studies of human locomotion, created a heroic effect in my actions, reflecting the sense of self-importance we sometimes unconsciously resort to when trying to overcome the problems we have created for ourselves.”
